Why Filter Your Florida Water?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 90 percent of Americans get their tap water from community systems that must adhere to safe drinking water standards.
If you are among the 90 percent whose tap water flows from a municipal or community supply, you may wonder why you should be concerned about water quality. After all, the supplier must maintain safe drinking water standards.
Tap Water Contamination
According to the CDC, tap water is generally safe to drink but can become contaminated.
- A flood following significant rainfall or one of our notorious hurricanes can cause sewage overflow, triggering a health department advisory to boil water.
- A malfunctioning wastewater treatment plant may taint the community water supply with bacteria, pesticides, fertilizers, and other contaminants.
- Your own plumbing system may pollute your water supply. The water supply line to your home may be damaged, allowing dirt and bacteria to enter your system.
- Rust, sediment, and lead from deteriorating pipes and faucets can pollute the water you drink and use for cooking, laundry, and bathing. Lead-tainted water can cause issues with the nervous and renal systems, and bacteria can lead to gastrointestinal problems.
Our expert plumbers at Paradise Plumbing, Air & Electric can help you prevent contamination by keeping your plumbing system in top shape. Contact us to inspect your water lines. We will determine if any pipes have deteriorated or use outdated materials, such as galvanized steel and toxic lead. We are experts in whole-house repiping and plumbing repair.
South Florida Drinking Water Problems
South Florida residents aren’t just at risk from tap water contamination caused by hurricanes and septic leaks—Environmental Working Group (EWG)’s Tap Water Database shows that several municipal utilities in Broward County also detect chemical contaminants above health guidelines, even when they meet current federal limits.
Below are some common findings for Broward County utilities, including Pompano Beach, Weston, Fort Lauderdale, and Delray Beach.
- Chromium (hexavalent): 0.0744 ppb, more than three and a half times the EWG guideline. A known carcinogen, even low-level exposure is concerning.
- Arsenic: 0.750 ppb, 188 times the EWG’s guideline. A naturally occurring, but toxic, metalloid element.
- Perfluoroalkyl Chemicals (PFAS‐related): Including PFOA (1.63 ppt) and PFHXS (1.07 ppt) were detected significantly over guideline levels. These are persistent in the environment and may affect the liver, immune, and endocrine systems.
- Chloroform: 17.1 ppm. While there is no set federal limit, it is 43 times over the recommended EWG guideline of 0.4 ppb. A volatile organic compound that is a byproduct of the water disinfection process.
- Chlorate: 759.8 ppb, over three and a half times the EWG guideline (though no federal limit is set). A byproduct of water disinfecting that can cause harm to the thyroid.
- Chromium (hexavalent): 0.0485 ppb, more than twice the EWG guideline. A known carcinogen.
- Chromium: 0.0625 ppb detected, over three times the EWG’s health guideline (0.02 ppb). Known carcinogen.
- Haloacetic Acids (HAA5/HAA9): Respectively: 15.0 ppb and 37.7 ppb; 80 ppb and no labeled federal limit; 0.1 ppb and 0.06 ppb EWG.
- Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs): Byproduct of disinfection detected above health guidelines, linked to potential increased cancer risk.
- Arsenic: 1.20 ppb, 300 times the EWG’s guideline. A toxic, natural metalloid.
- Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHXS): A PFAS‐related, man-made chemical contaminant. Measures at 4.7 ppt, which is 4,700 times over the EWG guideline of 0.0001 and half the legal limit of 10.0 ppt.
- Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs): 19.9 ppb (legal limit: 80 ppb; EWG’s Health Guideline: 0.15 ppb). Detected as a byproduct of chlorination, which may increase the risk of cancer over long-term exposure.
- Arsenic: 0.700 ppb, 175 times the EWG’s guideline. While naturally occurring, it is a highly toxic poison.
- Haloacetic Acids (HAA5/HAA9): 20.3 ppb and 31.4 ppb, respectively; both hundreds of times over guidelines. Are also disinfection byproducts that can increase the risk of cancer.
- Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA): PFAS‐related, man-made chemical contaminant. Currently measures 14.2 ppt, which is 158 times over the EWG guideline and significantly over the proposed legal limit of 4.0 ppt.
- Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHXS): Another PFAS‐related, man-made chemical contaminant. Currently measures 7.7 ppt, which is 7,700 times over the EWG guideline of 0.0001 and just under the legal limit of 10.0 ppt.
These findings suggest that “legal” under federal standards doesn’t always equate to “ideal” or “safe by more protective measures.” Local factors—groundwater sources, aging pipes, treatment byproducts, and contaminant buildup—mean many residents could benefit from additional filtration to reduce unnecessary and unwanted exposure.
Common Water Contaminants in South Florida

- Chromium (hexavalent): A naturally occurring and industrial byproduct that is a known toxin and carcinogen.
- Chlorate: A byproduct of water disinfecting that can cause harm to the thyroid.
- Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs): Byproduct of disinfection detected above health guidelines, linked to potential increased cancer risk.
- Haloacetic Acids (HAA5/HAA9): Also disinfection byproducts that can increase the risk of cancer.

Whole-House and Point-of-Use Water Filter Installation
We can install a whole-house filtering system near the entry point of your main water line, reducing contaminants before they reach your faucets, showerheads, and appliances. For more targeted protection, we also install point-of-use filters, such as under-sink or countertop units, that provide clean water right where you drink or cook.
A home water testing kit can help identify the contaminants in your water and guide which system is best for your needs.
At Paradise Plumbing, Air & Electric, we offer flexible financing options (subject to approved credit) to maintain your water filtering system and other plumbing equipment.
How Water Filtration Systems Work
Our trained pros at Paradise Plumbing, Air & Electric can help you decide which filter is best for your home.
Carbon Water Filtration Systems
A carbon filter, for example, can screen out some chemicals, such as chlorine, volatile organic chemicals, and some heavy metals. Block carbon filters also can eliminate some microorganisms like Giardia, which can cause intestinal infections.
Sediment Water Filters
Sediment filters rid your water supply of dirt, rust particles, and sand. They often pair with carbon filters or ultraviolet (UV) filters that kill bacteria, algae, and viruses.
Reverse Osmosis Water Filter
A reverse osmosis system uses high water pressure to push water through a semipermeable membrane that filters some chemicals, minerals, and bacteria. This system is generally installed in the kitchen, as a point-of-use system, where pristine water is needed for drinking and cooking.
Water Softeners
We also install water softeners that remove iron, manganese, calcium, and magnesium from your water. These systems can also prevent heavy metals, nitrates, and some radioactive materials from entering your water supply.
HALO Whole-Home Water Filtration Systems
At Paradise Plumbing, Air & Electric, we proudly install and service HALO Water Filtration Systems, one of the most trusted solutions for whole-home water treatment.
